Roadmap
What we're working on next for Sherman Studio. Everything on this page is planned and not available yet. Details may change before it ships, and we'll announce each feature on What's new when it's ready.
GitHub integration (planned)
Keep a site in your own GitHub repository and deploy it from there, while still editing it in the studio when you like.
Connect a repo and deploy from it
- Connect a GitHub repository to a site through the Sherman Web Design GitHub App, and deploy the full site from the repo.
- Pushes to the site's deploy branch deploy automatically. The same commit always produces the same result.
- Your design files live in the repo. Large files and files your visitors upload stay in studio storage and are referenced from the repo.
- For CI, there will also be a per-site, deploy-only key: keep it in your repo's secrets and deploy from a GitHub Action.
Branches and studio edits
- Each site picks its own deploy branch and studio branch.
- Edits made in the studio are committed only to the studio branch (the studio creates it if it's missing), and a pull request into the deploy branch is opened for convenience.
- Merging that pull request is up to you, so you can refactor freely in your own branches.
- A site deploys only once its deploy branch holds a valid site.
- Test environments are simply other sites that track other branches.
Site-to-site deploys
Deploy one site to another, such as staging to production. Secrets and records stay on the target site, and are copied only when the deploy names them explicitly.
Deploy history and rollback
- A paginated list of a site's deploys from GitHub.
- Rolling back redeploys the commit you choose and refreshes the studio branch and its pull request. Your git history is left for you to manage.
Who can connect a repo
- The person who connects the repo needs the Editor role or higher on the site.
- Deploys run with that person's role, and pause if their role is reduced.
- Anyone with the same role or higher can reconnect the repo or switch to a different one.
Sign in with GitHub
The studio's sign-in page will offer GitHub alongside the other sign-in options. A GitHub sign-in links to an existing account only through a verified email address, and you can link several sign-in methods to one account in your settings.
The opus command-line tool
A command-line tool, opus, to log in, export and import records, pull a site, and deploy.
